Marketers have generally focused much of their time and energy on managing the price side of that equation, since raising prices can immediately boost profits. But that\u2019s the easy part: Pricing usually consists of managing a relatively small set of numbers, and pricing analytics and tactics are highly evolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u5ba2\u6237\u771f\u6b63\u91cd\u89c6\u7684\u4e1c\u897f\u662f\u5f88\u96be\u786e\u5b9a\u7684\u800c\u4e14\u4f34\u968f\u7740\u590d\u6742\u7684\u5185\u5fc3\u6d3b\u52a8\u3002\u9886\u5bfc\u56e2\u961f\u5982\u4f55\u79ef\u6781\u7684\u7ba1\u7406\u4ef7\u503c\u6216\u8bbe\u6cd5\u63d0\u4f9b\u66f4\u591a\u4ef7\u503c\uff0c\u65e0\u8bba\u4ece\u529f\u80fd\u4e0a\uff08\u8282\u7ea6\u65f6\u95f4\u3001\u964d\u4f4e\u6210\u672c\uff09\u8fd8\u662f\u60c5\u611f\u4e0a\uff08\u51cf\u5c11\u7126\u8651\u3001\u63d0\u4f9b\u5a31\u4e50\uff09\uff1f\u79bb\u6563\u9009\u62e9\u5206\u6790\u2014\u2014\u6a21\u62df\u4ea7\u54c1\u7279\u5f81\u3001\u5b9a\u4ef7\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u7ec4\u4ef6\u7684\u4e0d\u540c\u7ec4\u5408\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u2014\u2014\u4ee5\u53ca\u7c7b\u4f3c\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u6280\u672f\u662f\u5f3a\u5927\u800c\u6709\u7528\u7684\u5de5\u5177\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u5b83\u4eec\u88ab\u8bbe\u8ba1\u7528\u6765\u6d4b\u8bd5\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u5bf9\u5148\u5165\u4e3a\u4e3b\u4ef7\u503c\u89c2\u5ff5\u7684\u53cd\u5e94\u2014\u2014\u800c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6982\u5ff5\u662f\u7ba1\u7406\u8005\u4e60\u60ef\u7528\u4e8e\u505a\u5224\u65ad\u7684\u3002\u63d0\u51fa\u65b0\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\u9700\u8981\u9884\u5224\u51fa\u4eba\u4eec\u53ef\u80fd\u8ba4\u4e3a\u6709\u4ef7\u503c\u7684\u5176\u4ed6\u4e1c\u897f\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">What consumers truly value, however, can be difficult to pin down and psychologically complicated. How can leadership teams actively manage value or devise ways to deliver more of it, whether functional (saving time, reducing cost) or emotional (reducing anxiety, providing entertainment)? Discrete choice analysis\u2014which simulates demand for different combinations of product features, pricing, and other components\u2014and similar research techniques are powerful and useful tools, but they are designed to test consumer reactions to preconceived concepts of value\u2014the concepts that managers are accustomed to judging. Coming up with new concepts requires anticipating what else people might consider valuable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u5f53\u7136\uff0c\u7279\u5b9a\u7684\u4ea7\u54c1\u6216\u670d\u52a1\u4e2d\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\u7684\u91cf\u548c\u8d28\u603b\u662f\u5b58\u5728\u4e8e\u65c1\u89c2\u8005\u7684\u773c\u4e2d\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u666e\u904d\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\u57fa\u77f3\u786e\u5b9e\u662f\u5b58\u5728\uff0c\u4e3a\u4f01\u4e1a\u521b\u9020\u4e86\u673a\u4f1a\uff0c\u8ba9\u5b83\u4eec\u5728\u5f53\u524d\u5e02\u573a\u4e0a\u63d0\u9ad8\u4e1a\u7ee9\uff0c\u6216\u6253\u5165\u65b0\u7684\u5e02\u573a\u3002\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e25\u683c\u7684\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u4ef7\u503c\u6a21\u578b\u5141\u8bb8\u4e00\u4e2a\u516c\u53f8\u63d0\u51fa\u65b0\u7684\u4ea7\u54c1\u548c\u670d\u52a1\u4ef7\u503c\u7ec4\u5408\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u5206\u6790\u663e\u793a\uff0c\u6b63\u786e\u7684\u7ec4\u5408\u53ef\u4ee5\u8ba9\u5ba2\u6237\u7684\u5fe0\u8bda\u5ea6\u66f4\u9ad8\uff0c\u54c1\u724c\u6d88\u8d39\u610f\u613f\u66f4\u5f3a\uff0c\u5e76\u6301\u7eed\u4fdd\u6301\u4f01\u4e1a\u6536\u5165\u589e\u957f\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">The amount and nature of value in a particular product or service always lie in the eye of the beholder, of course. Yet universal building blocks of value do exist, creating opportunities for companies to improve their performance in current markets or break into new ones. A rigorous model of consumer value allows a company to come up with new combinations of value that its products and services could deliver. The right combinations, our analysis shows, pay off in stronger customer loyalty, greater consumer willingness to try a particular brand, and sustained revenue growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>\u6211\u4eec\u5df2\u7ecf\u786e\u5b9a\u4e8630\u4e2a\u201c\u4ef7\u503c\u5143\u7d20\u201d\u2014\u2014\u5c5e\u4e8e\u672c\u8d28\u548c\u79bb\u6563\u5f62\u5f0f\u7684\u57fa\u672c\u5c5e\u6027\u3002<\/strong><\/span>\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5143\u7d20\u5206\u4e3a\u56db\u7c7b:\u529f\u80fd\u578b\u3001\u60c5\u611f\u578b\u3001\u6539\u53d8\u751f\u6d3b\u578b\u548c\u793e\u4f1a\u5f71\u54cd\u578b\u3002\u4e00\u4e9b\u5143\u7d20\u66f4\u4e13\u6ce8\u4e8e\u5185\u5728\uff0c\u4e3b\u8981\u662f\u6ee1\u8db3\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u7684\u4e2a\u4eba\u9700\u6c42\u3002\u4f8b\u5982\uff0c\u6539\u53d8\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u5143\u7d20\u52a8\u673a\u662fFitbit\u8fd0\u52a8\u8ffd\u8e2a\u4ea7\u54c1\u7684\u6838\u5fc3\u3002\u53e6\u4e00\u4e9b\u5219\u5411\u5916\u805a\u7126\uff0c\u5e2e\u52a9\u5ba2\u6237\u4e0e\u5916\u90e8\u4e16\u754c\u4e92\u52a8\u6216\u786e\u5b9a\u65b9\u5411\u3002\u529f\u80fd\u5143\u7d20\u662fThe Container Store\uff08\u7f8e\u56fd\u5bb6\u5c45\u96f6\u552eo2o\u4f01\u4e1a\uff09\u548cIntuit\u7684TurboTax\uff08\u62a5\u7a0e\u8f6f\u4ef6\uff09\u7684\u6838\u5fc3\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u4e24\u8005\u90fd\u662f\u5728\u5e2e\u52a9\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u5904\u7406\u4ed6\u4eec\u751f\u6d3b\u4e2d\u7684\u590d\u6742\u4e8b\u52a1\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">We have identified 30 \u201celements of value\u201d\u2014fundamental attributes in their most essential and discrete forms.\u00a0These elements fall into four categories: functional, emotional, life changing, and social impact. Some elements are more inwardly focused, primarily addressing consumers\u2019 personal needs. For example, the life-changing element\u00a0motivation\u00a0is at the core of Fitbit\u2019s exercise-tracking products. Others are outwardly focused, helping customers interact in or navigate the external world. The functional element\u00a0organizes\u00a0is central to The Container Store and Intuit\u2019s TurboTax, because both help consumers deal with complexities in their world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>\u4e00\u3001\u4ef7\u503c\u8981\u7d20\u91d1\u5b57\u5854\uff08The elements of value pyramid\uff09<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>\u4ea7\u54c1\u548c\u670d\u52a1\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u4ef7\u503c\u7684\u57fa\u672c\u8981\u7d20\uff0c\u89e3\u51b3\u4e86\u56db\u79cd\u9700\u6c42\uff1a\u529f\u80fd\u3001\u60c5\u611f\u3001\u751f\u6d3b\u53d8\u5316\u548c\u793e\u4f1a\u5f71\u54cd\u3002\u603b\u7684\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u5143\u7d20\u8d8a\u591a\uff0c\u5ba2\u6237\u7684\u5fe0\u8bda\u5ea6\u8d8a\u9ad8\uff0c\u516c\u53f8\u6301\u7eed\u7684\u6536\u5165\u589e\u957f\u4e5f\u5c31\u8d8a\u9ad8\u3002<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Products and services deliver fundamental elements of value that address four kinds of needs: functional, emotional, life changing, and social impact. For example, when someone says her bank is \u201cconvenient,\u201d its value derives from some combination of the functional elements\u00a0saves time,\u00a0avoids hassle,\u00a0simplifies,\u00a0and\u00a0reduces effort.\u00a0And when the owner of a $10,000 Leica talks about the quality of the product and the pictures it takes, an underlying life-changing element is\u00a0self-actualization,\u00a0arising from the pride of owning a camera that famous photographers have used for a century.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>\u4ef7\u503c\u8981\u7d20\u5ef6\u4f38\u4e86Maslow\u7684\u201c\u9700\u6c42\u5c42\u6b21\u201d\uff08The elements of value approach extends Maslow\u2019s \u201chierarchy of needs\u201d\uff09<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>30\u5e74\u7684\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u7814\u7a76\u548c\u5bf9\u4f01\u4e1a\u5ba2\u6237\u7684\u89c2\u5bdf\u8ba9\u6211\u4eec\u53d1\u73b0\u4e86\u8fd930\u4e2a\u57fa\u672c\u5c5e\u6027\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5c5e\u6027\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u4ece\u5b9a\u6027\u548c\u5b9a\u91cf\u7684\u5ba2\u6237\u7814\u7a76\u4e2d\u83b7\u5f97\u7684\u3002\u8bb8\u591a\u7814\u7a76\u6d89\u53ca\u4f17\u6240\u5468\u77e5\u7684\u8bbf\u8c08\u6280\u5de7\u201claddering\u201d\uff0c\u5b83\u63a2\u7a76\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u7684\u521d\u59cb\u504f\u597d\uff0c\u4ee5\u786e\u5b9a\u9a71\u4f7f\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u6df1\u5c42\u539f\u56e0\u3002\uff08Laddering\u65b9\u6cd5\u53ef\u8bd1\u4e3a\u201c\u722c\u68af\u6cd5\u201d\uff0c\u4e5f\u7c7b\u4f3c\u4e8e&#8221;5WHY&#8221;\u6cd5\u3002\u8fd9\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u201c\u6253\u7834\u7802\u9505\u95ee\u5230\u5e95\u201d\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u63d0\u5021\u5728\u8bbf\u8c08\u65f6\u5bf9\u7528\u6237\u7684\u521d\u6b65\u56de\u7b54\u53cd\u590d\u8ffd\u95ee\u201c\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u201d\uff0c\u5f15\u5bfc\u7528\u6237\u4ece\u8868\u9762\u7684\u884c\u4e3a\u5f00\u59cb\u601d\u7d22\uff0c\u6e05\u7406\u51fa\u884c\u4e3a\u80cc\u540e\u7684\u52a8\u673a\u3001\u9700\u6c42\u4e43\u81f3\u4ef7\u503c\u548c\u6587\u5316\u89c2\u5ff5\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Three decades of experience doing consumer research and observation for corporate clients led us to identify these 30 fundamental attributes, which we derived from scores of quantitative and qualitative customer studies. Many of the studies involved the well-known interviewing technique \u201claddering,\u201d which probes consumers\u2019 initial stated preferences to identify what\u2019s driving them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u6a21\u578b\u53ef\u4ee5\u8ffd\u6eaf\u5230\u5fc3\u7406\u5b66\u5bb6Abraham Maslow\u57281943\u5e74\u9996\u6b21\u53d1\u8868\u7684\u201c\u9700\u6c42\u5c42\u6b21\u201d\u6982\u5ff5\u3002\u5f53\u65f6\uff0c\u5e03\u9c81\u514b\u6797\u5b66\u9662\u7684\u4e00\u540d\u6559\u5458\u9a6c\u65af\u6d1b\u8ba4\u4e3a\uff0c\u4eba\u7c7b\u7684\u884c\u4e3a\u6e90\u4e8e\u4e00\u79cd\u5929\u751f\u7684\u613f\u671b\uff0c\u6ee1\u8db3\u4ece\u57fa\u672c\uff08\u5b89\u5168\u3001\u6e29\u6696\u3001\u98df\u7269\u3001\u4f11\u606f\uff09\u5230\u590d\u6742\uff08\u81ea\u5c0a\u3001\u5229\u4ed6\u4e3b\u4e49\uff09\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u3002\u5982\u4eca\uff0c\u51e0\u4e4e\u6240\u6709\u7684\u8425\u9500\u4eba\u5458\u90fd\u719f\u6089Maslow\u7684\u7b49\u7ea7\u5236\u5ea6\u3002\u4ef7\u503c\u8981\u7d20\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u6269\u5c55\u4e86\u4ed6\u7684\u89c1\u89e3\uff0c\u628a\u91cd\u70b9\u653e\u5728\u5c06\u4eba\u4eec\u4f5c\u4e3a\u6d88\u8d39\u8005\u6765\u63cf\u8ff0\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u884c\u4e3a\u4e0e\u4ea7\u54c1\u548c\u670d\u52a1\u7684\u8054\u7cfb\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Our model traces its conceptual roots to the psychologist Abraham Maslow\u2019s \u201chierarchy of needs,\u201d which was first published in 1943. Then a faculty member at Brooklyn College, Maslow argued that human actions arise from an innate desire to fulfill needs ranging from the very basic (security, warmth, food, rest) to the complex (self-esteem, altruism). Almost all marketers today are familiar with Maslow\u2019s hierarchy. The popular assumption has been that people cannot attain the needs at the top until they have met the ones below. Maslow himself took a more nuanced view, realizing that numerous patterns of fulfillment can exist. To be able to deliver on those higher-order elements, a company must provide at least some of the functional elements required by a particular product category. For example,\u00a0nostalgia\u00a0or\u00a0integrates\u00a0may mean little to subsistence farmers in developing countries, whereas\u00a0reduces risk\u00a0and\u00a0makes money\u00a0are vital to them. Likewise, throughout history,\u00a0self-actualization\u00a0has been out of reach for most consumers, who were focused on survival (even if they found fulfillment through spiritual or worldly pursuits). Each respondent scored one company\u2014from which he or she had bought a product or service during the previous six months\u2014on each element, using a 0\u201310 scale. When companies had major branded divisions such as insurance or banking, we conducted separate interviews focused on those divisions. The survey confirmed that. Companies with high scores (defined as an 8 or above) on four or more elements from at least 50% of respondents\u2014such as Apple, Samsung, USAA, TOMS, and Amazon\u2014had, on average, three times the NPS of companies with just one high score, and 20 times the NPS of companies with none. More is clearly better\u2014although it\u2019s obviously unrealistic to try to inject all 30 elements into a product or a service. Even a consumer powerhouse like Apple, one of the best performers we studied, scored high on only 11 of the 30 elements. Strong performance on multiple elements does indeed correlate closely with higher and sustained revenue growth. Companies that scored high on four or more elements had recent revenue growth four times greater than that of companies with only one high score. This, too, was confirmed empirically. Amazon, for instance, achieved high scores on eight mostly functional elements, illustrating the power of adding value to a core offering. It has chosen product features that closely correspond to those in our model. For example, in creating Amazon Prime, in 2005, the company initially focused on delivering\u00a0reduces cost\u00a0and\u00a0saves time\u00a0by providing unlimited two-day shipping for a flat $79 annual fee. Then it expanded Prime to include streaming media (provides access\u00a0and\u00a0fun\/entertainment), unlimited photo storage on Amazon servers (reduces risk), and other features. Each new element attracted a large group of consumers and helped raise Amazon\u2019s services far above commodity status. Prime has penetrated nearly 40% of the U.S. retail market, and Amazon has become a juggernaut of consumer value. Are some of them more important than others? Do companies have to compete at or near the top of the pyramid to be successful? Or can they succeed by excelling on functional elements alone? What value do consumers see in digital versus omnichannel companies? In consumer banking,\u00a0provides access\u00a0and\u00a0heirloom\u00a0(a good investment for future generations) are the elements that matter;\u00a0in fact,\u00a0heirloom\u00a0is crucial in financial services generally, because of the connection between money and inheritance. The broad appeal of smartphones stems from how they deliver multiple elements, including\u00a0reduces effort, saves time, connects, integrates, variety, fun\/entertainment, provides access,\u00a0and\u00a0organizes.\u00a0Manufacturers of these products\u2014Apple, Samsung, and LG\u2014got some of the highest value ratings across all companies studied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u54ea\u4e9b\u8981\u7d20\u662f\u6700\u91cd\u8981\u7684\uff1f\uff08Which Elements Are Most Important?\uff09<\/p>\n<p>\u5ba2\u6237\u5bf9\u4ea7\u54c1\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\u9700\u6c42\u56e0\u884c\u4e1a\u800c\u5f02\u3002\u4ee5\u4e0b\u662f\u5f71\u54cd10\u79cd\u4f01\u4e1a\u5fe0\u8bda\u5ea6\u7684\u4e94\u5927\u56e0\u7d20\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">What customers value in products varies by industry. Overall, it achieved high scores on eight elements\u2014way ahead of traditional retailers. This finding is consistent with previous Bain analysis showing that digital technologies have been transforming physical businesses rather than annihilating them. The fusion of digital and physical channels is proving more powerful than either one alone. That accounts in part for why E*TRADE has invested in physical branches and why retailers such as Warby Parker and Bonobos have launched physical stores. Amazon expanded functional excellence in a mass market. Apple excels on 11 elements in the pyramid, several of them high up, which allows the company to charge premium prices. TOMS excels on four elements, and one of them is\u00a0self-transcendence,\u00a0because the company gives away one pair of shoes to needy people for every pair bought by a customer. Ultimately, however, the elements must prove their usefulness in solving business challenges, particularly growing revenue. Companies can improve on the elements that form their core value, which will help set them apart from the competition and meet their customers\u2019 needs better. Although many successful entrepreneurs have instinctively found ways to deliver value as part of their innovation process, that becomes harder as companies grow. The leaders of most large organizations spend less time with customers, and innovation often slows. Vanguard, for instance, added a low-fee, partly automated advice platform to its core investment services in order to keep its clients better informed and, in many cases, to reduce risk. A chainsaw manufacturer that felt undifferentiated used the elements of value to identify specific ways of making future products distinctive. They start by understanding which elements are the most important for their industry and how they stack up on those relative to competitors. If a company trails in the crucial elements, it should improve on them before attempting to add new ones. A large consumer bank found that although it fared relatively well on\u00a0avoids hassles\u00a0and\u00a0saves time,\u00a0it did not score well on\u00a0quality.\u00a0The bank did extensive research into why its quality ratings were low and launched initiatives to strengthen anti-fraud operations and enhance the mobile app experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u76ee\u524d\uff0c\u4ef7\u503c\u6a21\u578b\u7684\u6700\u5e7f\u6cdb\u7684\u5546\u4e1a\u6f5c\u529b\u5728\u4e8e\u5f00\u53d1\u65b0\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\u8981\u7d20\u7c7b\u578b\u3002\u5f53\u4f01\u4e1a\u80fd\u591f\u7a33\u5b9a\u53d1\u5c55\u5e76\u8fdb\u884c\u5408\u7406\u7684\u6295\u8d44\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u5f53\u8981\u7d20\u4e0e\u516c\u53f8\u7684\u54c1\u724c\u4fdd\u6301\u4e00\u81f4\u65f6\uff0c\u65b0\u589e\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\u8981\u7d20\u80fd\u591f\u53d1\u6325\u6700\u5927\u6548\u7528\u3002<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\">The broadest commercial potential of the elements of value model currently lies in developing new types of value to provide. One financial services company recognized that if it could attract more consumers to its retail banking business, it might be able to cross-sell insurance, investment advice, and other products. But how could it do that? For example,\u00a0provides access\u00a0and\u00a0connects\u00a0held appeal, because the bank might be able to provide access to mutual funds or connect consumers with financial planners. In the end, however, the team decided that neither element was feasible in this business, primarily for reasons of cost. Many of these new concepts could be delivered through an improved smartphone app that would increase customer engagement with the bank. The researchers began by amassing a detailed list of the attributes for each prototype\u2014ATM fees, overdraft fees, credit monitoring, customer service hours, and so on. They presented respondents with several sets of checking accounts that varied on these attributes, asking them to select which prototype from each set they preferred.
